5 Things Holding Men Back From God

Every man wants to become stronger.

Stronger in his faith.

Stronger in his discipline.

Stronger in his purpose.

Most men do not wake up wanting to drift away from God.

It happens slowly.

One compromise becomes another.

One distraction becomes a habit.

One unchecked sin becomes a stronghold.

The enemy rarely destroys a man overnight.

He distracts him one small step at a time.

The good news is that God does not leave us trapped.

Through Jesus, every chain can be broken.

Let's look at five of the biggest things holding men back from becoming the men God created them to be and what Scripture teaches us to do about them.

1. Lust

Lust is one of the greatest spiritual battles many Christian men face.

It promises satisfaction but always leaves you emptier than before.

It does not simply affect your actions.

It changes your heart.

It trains your mind to see people as objects instead of image-bearers of God.

It weakens your prayer life.

It steals your confidence before God.

It fills your mind with guilt and shame.

The more you feed lust, the harder it becomes to hear God's voice.

But God never intended you to stay trapped.

Jesus did not just die to forgive your sin.

He died to set you free from its power.

What Does The Bible Say?

Jesus warned us that lust begins long before physical actions.

It starts in the heart.

"Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart."

Matthew 5:28

God always wants to deal with the root, not just the fruit.

How To Fight Lust

  • Confess your sin honestly to God.
  • Remove easy access to temptation.
  • Fill your mind with Scripture every day.
  • Find accountability with another Christian man.
  • Pray before temptation becomes action.
  • Flee temptation instead of testing your strength.

Purity is not something you accidentally find. It is something you intentionally build one decision at a time.

2. Passive Faith

Many men believe in God.

Far fewer consistently pursue Him.

It is possible to love Jesus while still living spiritually asleep.

You pray only when life falls apart.

You open your Bible once a week.

You wait until you "feel spiritual."

Faith does not grow through good intentions.

It grows through daily consistency.

Athletes do not become strong by working out once a month.

Christians do not become spiritually mature by opening their Bible occasionally.

Every healthy relationship grows through time together.

Your relationship with God is no different.

What Does The Bible Say?

Jesus said:

"If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed."

John 8:31

Notice the word continue.

Following Jesus is not a one-time decision.

It is a daily lifestyle.

How To Strengthen Your Faith

  • Read your Bible every day, even if it is only fifteen minutes.
  • Pray out loud to stay focused.
  • Turn ordinary moments into worship.
  • Become part of a healthy local church.
  • Keep a journal of what God is teaching you.
  • Stay consistent even when you do not feel motivated.

Discipline often comes before desire. The more you spend time with God, the more you will want to spend time with Him.

3. Worldly Goals

Success is not sinful.

Money is not sinful.

Ambition is not sinful.

But anything that becomes more important than God becomes an idol.

Many men spend years building careers while neglecting their souls.

They chase promotions.

Followers.

Recognition.

Status.

Comfort.

Meanwhile, their relationship with God slowly fades into the background.

Jesus never said not to work hard.

He simply told us what deserves first place.

What Does The Bible Say?

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

Matthew 6:33

Notice the order.

God first.

Everything else second.

When that order gets reversed, life becomes spiritually exhausting.

How To Realign Your Priorities

  • Ask yourself why you are chasing your current goals.
  • Compare your ambitions with Scripture.
  • Practice generosity regularly.
  • Invite God into your career decisions.
  • Define success as faithfulness, not popularity.
  • Remember that obedience matters more than applause.

God does not need you to become famous. He wants you to become faithful.

4. Toxic Entertainment

Everything you consume is discipling you.

Every song.

Every movie.

Every podcast.

Every Instagram Reel.

Every TikTok.

Every YouTube video.

Your heart is constantly being shaped by what enters your mind.

Many Christians pray for spiritual growth while feeding themselves content that celebrates everything God calls sin.

Eventually, what fills your mind begins to shape your desires.

What Does The Bible Say?

Paul wrote:

"Whatsoever things are true... honest... just... pure... lovely... think on these things."

Philippians 4:8

God cares about what captures your attention because your attention shapes your heart.

Guard Your Mind

  • Replace worldly music with worship.
  • Evaluate the shows you binge.
  • Set healthy limits on social media.
  • Read books that strengthen your faith.
  • Listen to biblical teaching throughout the week.
  • Ask yourself one simple question:

"Does this draw me closer to Jesus, or further away?"

What you repeatedly consume eventually becomes who you are. Protect your heart.

5. Weak Friendships

The people around you influence the person you are becoming.

Whether you realize it or not, your closest friends are shaping your future.

Some friends encourage holiness.

Others normalize compromise.

Some challenge you to become more like Christ.

Others quietly pull you away from Him.

No man was designed to fight spiritual battles alone.

Even Jesus surrounded Himself with close disciples.

Christian brotherhood is not optional.

It is part of God's design.

What Does The Bible Say?

"Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend."

Proverbs 27:17

Healthy friendships do not simply make life more enjoyable.

They make you stronger.

Build Godly Friendships

  • Pray that God brings faithful men into your life.
  • Join a Bible study or men's group.
  • Serve at your local church.
  • Be honest about your struggles.
  • Encourage other believers regularly.
  • Walk away from relationships that continually pull you toward sin.

Your circle can either strengthen your walk with God...

Or slowly destroy it.

Choose wisely.

Final Thoughts

None of these five struggles have to define your life.

Jesus offers forgiveness.

Freedom.

Purpose.

And the power to become a new man.

Real transformation does not happen overnight.

It happens one surrendered day at a time.

Keep choosing obedience.

Keep returning to God's Word.

Keep praying.

Keep fighting.

God is not looking for perfect men.

He is looking for surrendered ones.

Remember These Five Areas

  • Lust
  • Passive Faith
  • Worldly Goals
  • Toxic Entertainment
  • Weak Friendships

Which one do you struggle with the most?

Be honest with yourself.

That is often the place where God wants to begin His deepest work.

Want To Go Deeper?

If you are trying to build a consistent relationship with God, do not do it alone.
